  • Truck Fled Scene After Fatally Striking Bicyclist in Elizabeth, Police Say
    Updated On: Oct 11, 2018

    September 16, 2015

NJ.com - ELIZABETH - Elizabeth police have identified the bicyclist who was struck and killed by a truck Wednesday morning as Cassidy Liaci, 37.

According to Elizabeth Police Lt. Dan Geddes, patrol units responded to a 911 call of a bicyclist struck across from 935 Fairmount Avenue just after 9 a.m. Upon arriving, officers found Liaci in the street next to his damaged bicycle and having sustained traumatic injuries, Geddes said.

Liaci was struck by a blue tractor-style truck with a large "dump" style trailer that fled the scene prior to the arrival of emergency responders, Geddes said.

Emergency medical units from the Elizabeth Fire Department responded, along with paramedics from Trinitas Hospital, where Liaci was transported in grave condition and later pronounced dead, according to Geddes. Liaci had no known address, he said.

Currently, an investigation is underway by detectives from the Elizabeth Police Department Traffic Unit and Identification Unit. The Union County Police Fatal Accident Response Team also responded to assist with the investigation, Geddes said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective William Buteau of the Elizabeth Police Dept. Traffic Unit at (908) 558-2068.  All calls will remain confidential.
