RLS Metro Breaking News - Emergency crews responded to the rear of the Unique Thrift Store Monday afternoon for a report of a trash compactor fire.
When Elizabeth Fire Department arrived to the Unique Thrift Store located on the 100 block of Broad Street at approximately 12:36 p.m., fire in the compactor caused a heavy smoke condition inside the Unique Thrift Store causing an evacuation of the store.
The fire was put out in just over an hour with no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire has not been determined as of this morning but we were told that workers had been inserting wet clothes into the machinery, Deputy Chief Andy Sandoukas said.
It is not clear whether that played a role as to what sparked the compactor.
This was the first time Engine 5's piercing nozzle was utilized in operations for the department in that capacity since it arrived earlier this year.
