NJ.com - ELIZABETH - A portion of Rahway Avenue is closed Monday morning as police investigate an accident in which witnesses say a woman crossing the street with two children was hit by a mail truck.
The woman was holding a young girl when she was struck, and the child flew out of her arms on impact, said Andres Figueroa, who saw the accident occur.
Another bystander called 911 while a woman pulled the second child, a boy who had been walking, out of the road, Figueroa said.
"I never expect to see something like that, a kid flying," he said. "It's unbelievable."
A United States Postal Service delivery vehicle was cordoned off behind caution tape near the intersection of Rahway Avenue and Chilton Street. The driver remained on scene and spoke to police.
Members of the Elizabeth police and fire departments were on scene as of around 10:30 a.m., as were paramedics from Trinitas Regional Medical Center.
The woman and children were taken away in ambulances, witnesses said.
Official details were not immediately available.
With Rahway Avenue closed between Dehart Place and South Street for the investigation, NJ Transit announced detours of its Number 48 bus route.
