NJ.com - ELIZABETH - Two dockworkers were injured today in Elizabeth, when officials said a so-called straddle truck caught fire and the blaze spread to the shipping container it was carrying.
The fire occurred at the APM Port Elizabeth terminal along Newark Bay, where last month a woman dockworker was struck and killed by vehicle whose driver was later charged with being drunk at the time.
The shipping container was carrying wood and wood pulp, and the truck and container were engulfed in flames when officers arrived at the scene, said Joe Pentangelo, a Port Authority Police spokesman.Pentangelo.
A spokeswoman for the Elizabeth Fire Department said firefighters got a call at 10:46 a.m., and that the blaze was under control about 50 minutes later.
Pentangelo said the driver of the straddle truck was taken to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston for treatment of minor burns and a knee injury suffered while leaping from the burning vehicle. Another worker was treated for smoke inhalation at Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth, Pentangelo said.
There was no word on how the straddle truck caught fire.
On Aug. 7 at APM, a woman longshore worker was fatally struck by a top loader, another type of vehicle used to move shipping containers. In that case, the driver of the top loader was charged with drunk driving and death by auto.
