ELIZABETH FIREFIGHTERS RACE SANTA TO DELIVER HOLIDAY CHEER |
|
ELIZABETH, NJ – December 24, 2015 – With just days to spare Elizabeth Firefighters completed their yearly holiday benevolence. Every step of the way, at each ward’s tree lighting, at each special improvement district’s tree lighting, firefighters encountered a jolly man in a red suit, and even gave him a ride on a fire engine on a few occasions. This man, affectionately known as Santa Claus, brought smiles to the children of the city and inspired members to continue his work throughout the month.
FMBA Local 9 started the season off by donating toys to Ryan's Toy Roundup held again at Suspenders Restaurant and Pub. This yearly event honors the life of Ryan Faella, the late cousin of Local 9's members, Edward Sisk IV and Nicholas Sisk. “This is always a great event to start the season with because it honors a member of our extended firefighter family and puts into perspective what this season of giving is all about,” said Vice President David Bialas. The toys from Ryan’s Toy Roundup are donated to multiple charities in Elizabeth and around Union County.

ELIZABETH FIRE AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS RAISE $7000 FOR CHILDREN’S SPECIALIZED HOSPITAL, EPD PREVAILS 5-4 IN OVERTIME |
|
ELIZABETH, NJ – March 8, 2015 – The 2nd Annual Battle of the Badges Hockey Game raised $7000 from ticket sales and donations for the Children’s Specialized Hospital Friday Night Fever Program with donations still coming in. The game featured members of the Elizabeth Fire and Police Departments and was played in front of a capacity crowd at the historic Warinanco Ice Skating Center. EFD’s Bravest led 4-1 through two periods, but EPD’s Finest battled back to tie the game after pulling their goalie for an extra attacker in the waning minutes of the third period. In overtime, the Finest scored just over a minute into play for their second straight victory. EPD now leads 2-0 in the Battle of the Badges Hockey Series.
“While EPD was victorious in the game the real winners are the children that participate in the Friday Night Fever Program,” said Daniel Beirne, FMBA Local 9 State Delegate and one of the event organizers. The program is a monthly social and recreational program for teens with disabilities. “We have built a strong relationship with this program together with Officer Joseph Pevonis and the city police officers and we are looking forward to making next year’s game even better,” added Beirne. This year’s game was followed by a successful Family Skate with new features being discussed for next year’s game.

ELIZABETH FIRE AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS BATTLE ON ICE TO BENEFIT CHILDREN’S SPECIALIZED HOSPITAL |
|
ELIZABETH, NJ – March 8, 2015 – In the latest chapter of the Battle of the Badges series, Elizabeth firefighters and police officers take to the ice for the 2nd Annual Hockey Game on March 8, 2015 at the Warinanco Ice Skating Center. The puck drops at 6:00PM and all proceeds benefit Children’s Specialized Hospital.
Last year the Elizabeth Police Department skated to an 8-5 victory in front of a capacity crowd that generated $7,000 in donations, ticket sales, and 50/50s. All proceeds collected went towards the CSH Friday Night Fever Program a monthly social and recreational program for teens with disabilities. The opportunity to benefit this program was the work of CSH’s Community Engagement Coordinator Sara MacDuff.
The cost of tickets is a $10.00 donation which can be made in advance or at the door. Plan on getting to the rink early as the venue is expected to be standing room only, and stay late for a Family Skate that starts after the final buzzer. Skate rentals will be available for the Family Skate or you can bring your own.

ELIZABETH FIREFIGHTERS REFLECT ON SEASON OF GIVING |
|
ELIZABETH, NJ – January 12, 2015 – Three Kings Day, January 6th, marks the unofficial end of the holidays and members of the Elizabeth Firemen’s Mutual Benevolent Association of New Jersey, Branch No. 9, Inc. (FMBA Local 9) remained diligent in their benevolence during the busy season. In biblical history, the child of Bethlehem, Jesus, was visited by Magi on camels bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This season, the children of Elizabeth were visited by firefighters on fire trucks bringing gifts of toys, bicycles, and coats.
FMBA Local 9 started the season off by working with Janice de Avila who is known for her work around Elizabeth and her involvement with the Historic Midtown Special Improvement District. This year, her charity event was planned in cooperation with Michelino's Restaurant. FMBA Local 9 donated toys to be delivered to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Local 9 Vice President David Bialas stated, “Every event that Janice runs greatly benefits our community or a great cause, and we were happy to be able to join her in this celebration.” Local 9 duplicated its efforts by donating toys to Ryan's Toy Roundup held this year at Suspender Restaurant and Pub. This yearly event honors the life of Ryan Faella, the late cousin of Local 9's members, Edward Sisk IV and Nicholas Sisk. “Whenever an event honors a member of our firefighter family it gives the cause extra meaning,” added Vice President Bialas. The toys from Ryan’s Toy Roundup were donated to numerous charities in Elizabeth and around Union County.
